War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., Pvt. Frank Ashley, Co. H, 64th Ohio Vols., "Camp near Iuka, Miss., June 10, 1862", in part: "…this battle has been in operation for sometime at Corinth, but that place is evacuated and General Pope followed them and was reenforced by 2 other divisions. Pope surrounded them and was drove back at first but have not heard from him since we left there…[we] moved east about 30 miles near Eastport, Miss. and near Brire river. That is the place that those 3 railroad bridges on the Memphis and Charlton railroad [are.] Our forces has possession of that and Fort Pillow & Memphis…McClellan has Richmond in his hands …so the rebel army will be well scattered…they can not hold out much longer…the citizens has hard times to live. They have nothing to sell…they have lost everything…and they have lost every station that affords them provisions…". VG
