War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., on patriotic stationery, Pvt. Frank Ashley, Co. H, 64th Ohio Vols., Bowling Green, Ky., Sept. 25, 1862. The battle of Munsfordville (also known as the battle of Green River) was a Union defeat in which Col. John T. Wilder was forced to surrender his garrison of just over 4000 men to Confederate Generals James R. Chalmer and Simon Buckner. The letter reads, in part: "…the rebels are between you and us…4280 of our men had to surrender last Wednesday night…but are paroled and…they are released now. They all came back to Bowling Green and…were ordered back to Green river where they were captured. There was about 8 or 9 hundred of the rebels killed and 30 of our men…our division left one week ago today…they are in pursuit…we are looking for an attack on the train. They will make a good haul if they should. There is about 4000 men here…we have been on the march since the 21 of August…we started at Stevenson and went near Chattanooga and turned back to Nashville…the rebels say that they will fight it out here…".
