A good war-date Union soldier's battle letter, 4pp. 8vo., Pvt. Frank Ashley, Co. H, 64th Ohio Vols., Murfreesboro, Tenn. Jan. 11, 1863, in part: "…the railroad was tore up, but…the river is up so that the boats can run up to Nashville…hope you enjoyed good time…New Years Day…the army took theirs on the battlefield near the town of Murfreesborough. There was a hard fight on that day…many…got legs and arms shot off. May a poor fellow ley on the battle field for the last time. Some of them froze to death. They were not allowed to have fire but a man that was not wounded could get along very well. There was 23 killed in our regt. 34 wounded and some missing. B. H. Ross was wounded in the shoulder and was taken by the rebels and was well taken care of. He is getting along well. Jack Packer [is] wounded. There was 3 killed in our company and 9 wounded, 15 [are] left yet. We have a large company. Our recruits have not come on yet but we look for them every day. It is hard to tell how many we lost or of the other side…it was a hard fought battle…the 20 Brigade has the [?] and the division also…the 20 Brigade saved the day when the 2 right divisions gave away. Our brigade was ordered to their help which was done bravely. Our brigade was almost surrounded…and [there was] firing on them from all sides but for all that they did not move and not until they was ordered [to] the third time…we had a good many wagons burned by the rebs…enclosed you will find a ring which was made by one of the boys that was shot on the battlefield…".
