A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., Pvt. Frank Ashley, Co. H, 64th Ohio Vols., "Camp in the woods near Dallas, Geo., May 29, 1864", in part: "…there has been considerable strife and blood shed since I last wrote…the 20 Corps lost heavy also the 3 divisions of the 4 Corps. There has been fighting for the last 4 days but each army holds their position. The rebs have fortifications, we have also but it took some labor and loss of life to obtain it…it is hard to tell what the intentions of the rebs are but a few more days will develop their plans. If they stand…they are whipped…there is very little left for the farmers to subsist on. The loss of the 64 in the last week is 2 killed and 6 wounded but none from Co. H…I have the horses and nigers to see to and see to procuring fed for them and to help issue rations to the boys and some times cold pills for the rebs…". VG
