A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., Pvt. Frank Ashley, Co. H, 64th Ohio Vols., "Camp on the Battle field near Dallas, Geo., June 3, 1864", in part: "…many families have been visited by the pale hand of death. There has been 6 or 7 deaths of my acquaintance…it is hard to tell who will be the next…some of my friends here have been visited by death. There has been 4 killed from our company. I also saw Hart Wood last night he was slightly wounded in the left arm. Their division lais on our right…Gen. Hooker encountered the enemy about 6 miles from Dallas…he drove them about 4 miles. He run him men near a marked battery…2 brigades was the suffers but the battery was captured…shortly after our division was marched up in line on the left but did not skirmish till next morning. The second day our ret was on the line it loss was 2 killed and 7 wounded one of which since died. It is now 10 days since the too armies have [been] near each other…I am tired of the noise…it is reported Hooker has possession of Atlanta…". The original stamped transmittal cover is included. VG.
