H, 64th Ohio Vols., "Battlefield near Marietta, Geo., June 23, 1864", in part: "…we have been having a long campaign…we have been…driving the before us. They have a strong position. They have fortifications on 2 high hills…they have the advantage but Sherman is flanking them and coming on their works endways…they have to leave. Our brigade charged on and held them that day. Our division fired 16 wagon loads of ammunition of 20,000 rounds in each load…they kept up a heavy fire on the …they had a heavy fortification and 2 batteries bearing on us but they could not us them. It would be instant death for them to raise their heads above their works. The ground was covered with lead. The Johnnies could not stand the fire so they left under cover of the night and by means saved their lives…the army is in fine spirits…Sherman provides well for his boys…he has the confidence of his boys. Wood's Division suffered heavily. At that time there was considerable grumbling but do not know as he was to blame…for he has to obey orders…some places is more dangerous to charge…than others…our brigade is on reserve at present but have been in front for the last 5 or 6 days…".
