A good war-date Union soldier's battle letter, 4pp. 8vo., Pvt. Frank Ashley, Co. H, 64th Ohio Vols., "Camped behind the works 2 miles from Atlanta, Ga., July 24, 1864", in part: "…we have not taken Atlanta yet…some 2 or 3 Batteries are amusing themselves throwing shells in the town…have had 2 heavy fights with the . Our division…and Hooker's Corps were engaged. The advanced and charged on our men [and] came on them by surprise…our lines were formed. Our division had just crossed Peach Tree Creek and 2 of Hooker's divisions were across and the other crossing when the charge was made. The left of our division was driven back but soon formed and drove the enemy back and held the ground and the right division of Hooker's Corps was also driven back but soon reenforced by the division that was crossing…the loss on our side was light, was 8 killed and 45 wounded in the 2 divisions of the 4th [Corps]. Cannot tell the loss of Hooker's Corps. The loss in killed will exceed 800. There was 540 buried and near 200…that are laying yet unburied. The took off quite a number during the night…we have to mourn the loss of our best men killed that was Harrison Trago. He was killed instantly…on the 20 of July. The left in the night of the 21 [and] fell back too miles where they have strong works. We advanced on the morning to within a short distance…and fortified. While this was going on McPherson had a heavy fight with them on the left. They drove him at first but he got the better of them…and drove them back…it was reported that Gen. McPherson was killed but is contradicted since…we have the news of an other draft…for 500,000 more men…if we had a larger army here we could annihilate them…". VG
