A good war-date Union officer's battle letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by 1st Lt. Maurice Leyden, [POW Darbytown Road, Va., 10/07/64, confined Libby Prison & Salisbury, N. C.], Co. B, 3rd New York Cavalry, City Point, Va., May 19, 1864", in part: "…while I write fighting is going on at the front. I can hear the cannon distinctly. I have no fears of our being ordered up for a day or two as every man and horse is reported unserviceable…we were ordered to the front on the 11th. We received orders not to take any rations…and no one was allowed to take any blanket…the order came from Gen. Grant to Gen. Kautz so we started…with the idea of living on the country. All we found was bacon and corn meal which would have done very well had we only time to stop and cook it…Capt. Ebbs would recover. I am the only officer with the company…". The original stamped transmittal cover is included. Near fine.
