A good war-date Union officer's battle letter, 2pp. 8vo., written by 1st Lt. Maurice Leyden, [POW Darbytown Road, Va., 10/07/64, confined Libby Prison & Salisbury, N. C.], Co. B, 3rd New York Cavalry, "On the field near Rheames Station, Va., Aug. 26, 1864", in part: "The enemy attacked us at this point yesterday with a large force. Our troops repulsed them several times, but were compelled to fall back loosing some artillery. Our loss in killed and wounded must be large, but nothing compared with the enemy's. We are expecting an attack every moment this morning…I have only about fifteen men left. Capt. Ebbs called to see me yesterday just before the fight commenced…". The original stamped transmittal cover is included. Near fine.
