A good war-date Union officer's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by 1st Lt. Maurice Leyden, [POW Darbytown Road, Va., 10/07/64, confined Libby Prison & Salisbury, N. C.], Co. B, 3rd New York Cavalry, Petersburg, Va., Sept. 8, 1864, in part: "…we have been on the go 'Uncle Sam' intends that the cavalry shall earn their 'Green-backs' during this campaign. We did not go with Sheridan for some reason…the 3rd is now held in reserve near Gen. Kautz Hd. Qrs. Our duties will be scouting and reconnoitering. We are…to be in readiness to move at any moment to that part of our lines which may be attacked…tin has been unusually quiet all along Gen. Grant's lines for several days. The cavalry Greig's and Kautz's made a reconnoissance towards Petersburg last week…a slight skirmish was the only casualty…". The original stamped transmittal cover is included. Near fine.
