A good war-date Union officer's letter, 5pp. 8vo., written by 1st Lt. Maurice Leyden, [POW Darbytown Road, Va., 10/07/64, confined Libby Prison & Salisbury, N. C.], Co. B, 3rd New York Cavalry, "Camp 3rd N. Y. Cavalry, in the field, Sept. 19, 1864", in part: "…I have been on picket for the past five days…the Johnnies paid Gen. Grant…an unwelcome visit one morning last week. They came down with some five thousand cavalry, charged on the 11th Pa. and 1st D. C. Cavalry who were doing picket duty on the left…drove them in…leaving two companies, with mine…cut off…my chance was good for Richmond…we had no communications…with our division…we held our line…it was one of the most beautiful moonlight evenings…I was in the saddle, the men drawn up in line…several shots fired by the vedettes, when up galloped a courier with the news that the enemy had fallen back…Capt. Chamberlain…went home with no more of a wound than I have received a dozen times…a piece of shell hit him and he played it so as to get home…". The original stamped transmittal cover is included.
