A good war-date Union officer's POW letter, 1p. 8vo., written by 1st Lt. Maurice Leyden, [POW Darbytown Road, Va., 10/07/64, confined Libby Prison & Salisbury, N. C.], Co. B, 3rd New York Cavalry, Danville, Va., Oct. 23, 1864, in part: "…I am a prisoner of war-was taken on the 7th…near Richmond spent twenty four hours in Libby from there to Salisbury N. C. and from there here…Gen. Mayer and Col. [William C.] Raulston[24th N. Y. Cavalry] you saw at the fair…are here in the same room…and many others. I will not be permitted to write more…". Near fine.
