A good war-date Union officer's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by the brother of Brig. Gen. David Mc. Gregg, Lt. Thomas J. Gregg, Co. F, 6th Penn. Cavalry (Rush's Lancers), Kirkwood House, Washington, Oct. 28, 1862, in part: "…Dave got me a Lieut. commission in a new regiment now recruiting at Philada. I could have gotten one in an old regiment but Dave & Col. Patterson thought it best to go into a new regiment…so you are sending me a box. I may not be here when it comes…I have given directions not to have it opened, only for the use of the men in the ward…Dave left for his regiment last week…I shall go down to see the Monitor before I leave. She is now in the Navy yard…". Near fine.
