A good war-date Union officer's letter, 3pp. 4to., written by Lt. Thomas J. Gregg, Co. F, 6th Penn. Cavalry (Rush's Lancers) as aide de camp on the staff of his brother Brig. Gen. David Mc. Gregg, "Head Quart 2nd C. C., Warrenton, [Va.], Feb. 15, 1864", in part: "…our Head Quarters are in the town of Warrenton at the home of Gov. [William "Extra Billy"] Smith whose wife & daughter are here…we have now comfortable quarters…and were it not for Mosby we could have a delightful time as it is it is not safe to live a mile from town . Many officers expect their wives here. Mrs. Gregg will be here…in a week or so…Phil [his black servant] has just come in…all talk and think of our prospects. Soon we will be on the go 'On to Richmond' or any other country town…when we first came here I spent most of my evenings out. The young ladies are very kind and for some time I had quite a good time, but they had too many favors to ask…as I am one of the Div. staff. I was constantly being asked to do this or to do that. But it being out of my line to grant favors I soon became unpopular and now confine myself to visiting one or two Cav. [?]…". VG
