STEPHENS, Alexander (1812 -1883 ) Confederate vice-president, U.S. representative, governor; born near Crawfordville, Ga. He was admitted to the bar (1834) and served Georgia in the U.S. House of Representatives (Whig, 1843--53; Dem., 1853--59), where he opposed the war with Mexico but strongly supported the Compromise of 1850. Franked cover “Free Alexander Stephens MC” addressed to Colonel Stephens in Milledgville, Georgia. Fine. Framed.Linton Stephens (1823-1872) Was the Half-brother of Alexander Stephens and a delegate to the Georgia secession convention, 1861 and colonel in the Confederate Army during the Civil War.
