A good war-date Union officer's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by brevet Major Louis J. Sacriste, [Medal of Honor for capturing a rebel cannon at Chancellorsville & WIA Cold Harbor], 116th Penn. Vols., "Camp of the 116th Pa. Vols., April 16, 1865", to the widow of Lt. Eugene Brady [WIA Gettysburg] who was killed at the battle of Five Forks, Va., in part: "…you have received already the painful intelligence of your brave husband's death. I was a short distance from him when he fell. His last words were, O, God my wife and children. I had his body taken to division hospital, embalmed and sent home…we have been constantly moving and fighting…I have his valise and clothes, his sword, pocket book containing $16.50, some photographs etc…his pistol was lost by Sergt. Kelley on the battlefield…at a meeting of the officers…Preamble and resolutions were adopted and sent on for publication…myself and [the] company feel very sorry at your loss…at the time of his death there was three months due him…". The original transmittal cover is included. Both VG to near fine.
