A great war-date Union officer's battle letter, 2pp. 8vo., written by Captain Henry H. Gregg, Co. H, 125th Penn. Vols., [Antietam Battlefield], "Thursday, Sept. 18, 1862," addressed to his sister, in part: "I passed through a terrific battle yesterday but…escaped unharmed. The canister, grape, shell and bullets came thick and fast. I lost in killed and wounded about one fifth of my company-with my company I stood until nearly surrounded. We fell back over a ploughed field [the field in front of the Dunkard Church] open to their shots to the cover of woods. The battle will be renewed. I may return home but cannot pass unharmed through many such battles, it was terrific. This morning when we made up the accounts it was a sorrowful time. We are some six or eight miles from Harpers Ferry…the killed and wounded will reach a large figure. Lost Gen. Mansfield, our commanding Gen…Dave McCahan is badly wounded…". VG.
