There are several different versions of this image that were issued at the end of the Civil War pertaining to Confederate President Jefferson Davis being "On the run" from Union troops wearing women's clothing as a disguise. This version is the most desirable and difficult to source, and has a Wenderoth & Taylor, Philadelphia imprint on the verso. The image is a "From life" photograph of a man wearing a dress standing next to a bag with initials "J. D." (Jefferson Davis) on it. The body then has the superimposed head of Jefferson Davis added. Below Davis it reads "I thought your Government too magnanimous to hunt down WOMEN". All the other versions of Davis escaping are full cartoon images with no from life features. One can assume that a stage actor posed for the photographer. The CDV is in excellent condition, and would make a wonderful addition to a Civil War era image collection.
