A nice postwar cabinet card, entitled on the verso: "Battle Flag of Second Massachusetts Infantry…on the Court House Portico, Atlanta, Georgia, September 1864." Standing holding the flag in Color Sergeant Johnson while the inscription on the verso says it all, in part: "This flag was presented to the regiment at Camp Andrew…June 26, 1861. It was carried in every action…except at…Winchester…at the battle of Cedar Mountain its staff was shot in two and the eagle cut off…at Antietam the staff was pierced by three bullets and was shot away from…the Color Bearers belt. At Gettysburg three color bearers were killed and one seriously wounded…and its staff…shot into fragments…it was pierced by nearly one hundred bullets…". Near fine.
