At Gettysburg, while facing the historic charge of Early's men led by the Louisiana Tigers, Chase had a shell explode near him, which left him with 48 sharpnel wounds, and the loss of his right arm and left eye. He was loaded on a wagon and about to be buried with the dead when he spoke and alerted the wagooneer. He was then transferred to the hospital where the doctors left him to "finish dying" for three days, finally his wounds were treated. After 3 weeks he was carried out of the hospital to die again, the head surgeon even telling him that he had only 6 hours to live. But in the words of Chase "but I did not do him the favor."
