Lot of 20 clipped signatures, 19th century. Two of the clips are dated, 1806 and 1817 respectively, with the bulk of the material being from mid-century. Identified are clipped signatures of John W. Ellis, who died in office as the first Confederate governor of North Carolina, and Charles Courtney Tew, Confederate Colonel and founder of the Hillsborough Military Academy in North Carolina. Tew died in the Bloody Lane at Sharpsburg. Easily legible signatures in this group, many of which may have significant Civil War associations, are as follows: J. Bunting, J.R. Eggleston, Jno. D. Hawkins, Chas. Manly, Palmerton, David S. Reid, St. Vincent, M.S. Walker, R.I. Walker, and George Whitefield...Plus; Clip reading "Camp Hill near Danville Va July 13th 1861"...Plus; Free franked cover signed "L F S Foster", February 10, 1860, Washington, D.C. to Mr. F. W. Hyde, Norwich, Connecticut. This envelope would have originated with LaFayette S. Foster, U.S. Senator from Connecticut, 1855-1867. Items average VF condition.
