A complete issue of the Frank Leslie’s Illustrated Newspaper, October 12, 1861, 16pp., disbound, VG. From the back page, a 1/4 page political cartoon with a caption, “Lincoln- ‘I'm sorry to have to drop you, Sambo, but this concern won't carry us both!’” The artwork shows Abraham Lincoln, in a life preserver labeled "Union", on a storm tossed sea, pushing away an African American man who had been clinging to him; next to them floats a hat with papers labeled "Fremonts proclamation" and in the background is the mast of a ship flying a pennant "Proclamation." This is one of the important Lincoln - slavery cartoons! On the August 30th, Union General Fremont issued a proclamation freeing all slaves in Missouri that belonged to secessionists. In a letter dated September 11, Lincoln ordered Fremont to change his proclamation to conform to the First Confiscation Act. The letter was widely published in the newspapers, and Lincoln received many letters condemning his decision and expressing support for Fremont.
