A complete issue of the Frank Leslie’s Illustrated Newspaper, October 18, 1862, 16pp., plus a 16pp. supplement disbound, VG. From the back page, an usually large, 1/3 page political cartoon depicts President Lincoln as Sinbad walking out of the sea with Gideon Welles on his shoulders. The caption “Sinbad Lincoln and the Old Man of the Sea.” On the horizon are the CSN Merrimac and Nashville, unmolested. the public was critical of Welles, although he continued to have Lincoln’ support. Additionally, a full centerspread “The War on The Mississippi - The Rebel Forces, Consisting of Over 5,000 Men, Etc., Under the Command of Gens. Mackall and Gantt, Surrendering to Gen. Paine, Commander of the Union Troops at Tiptonville, Tenn., On the morning of April 8.”
