A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., in patriotic stationery, written by Sgt. Thomas H. Mason, Co. I, 56th New York (Tenth Legion), Meridian Hill, [Alexandria, Va.], Dec. 7, 1861, in part: "…I was in Washington yesterday. Colonel Van Wyck took the whole regiment on a visit to Washington to see the public buildings. We were in the President's House. We was in the large hall and there we was reviewed by Abe and when we went away he shook hands with us all. We went to the Institute from there we went [to] the Capital…". VG
