THE LOST PRINCIPLE; OR THE SECTIONAL EQUILIBRIUM: HOW IT WAS CREATED - HOW DESTROYED - HOW IT MAY BE RESTORED, 266 pp, quarto, by "Barbarossa", 1860, James Woodhouse & Co., Richmond, VA. Written on the eve of the Civil War by an anonymous Virginian, this remarkable book is a defense of slavery's "ameliorating influences on the Federal Government" and a call for sectional equity-- or separation. The author critically examines the Constitution, seeing it as having become a vehicle for Northern interests at the expense of Southern prosperity. He suggests reform, yet his bellicose conclusion reads "In this grand moment, Virginia, as well from the deep wrongs which she has sustained, as from other circumstances, is entitled to lead. With a powerful military organization, and fortified by Southern unity, she may yet play a great and useful part in the theatre of American affairs." It is interesting to note that the book's original owner's name was written on the inside cover only to be intentionally scratched out on a later date leaving the location only: Charleston, SC. Embossed hard cover lacking spine. Light internal foxing, but sound. Overall Very Good condition.
