Manuscript deposition signed "Gilbert C. Rapeley," Washington, February 16, 1816, reading, "I hereby certify upon the honor of a Citizen of the United States, that when I was a Liuet. Col. In the Army and in command of a few Troops acting aggressively against the hostile Creek Indians Majr Genl Picnkney ordered me in January or the beginning of February 1814 to 'spare neither trouble or expense in getting (sic) a body of friendly Indians' that pursuant to his order I received a body of Chactaws, Chickasaws & Creeks, in all amounting to more than seven hundred men, who were to be fed & to receive the same emoluments as the Regular Troops were entitled to. About the last of April or first of May following I was superseded in my command by Col. Milton who dismissed the Indians some time in May without having them regularly mustered for discharge - that during the time I had command, the Creeks were furnished, upon my order by the Q M with articles to the amt. of thirty eight dollars 18 ¾ cents, the Chickasaws with &c to the amt of two hundred and nine dollars 37 ½ cents and the Chactaw with two hundred and twenty three dollars 45 cents, part of which was for badges to distinguish them from the enemy they opposed."
