Poignant 3 ½ pg. letter dated September 6, 1901, the day McKinley was shot in Buffalo, New York. This fine letter reads in part "We have just been hearing the terrible news about the President - but as yet have no realizing sense of it. It is too bad to think of"…."Poor Mrs. McKinley - I cannot keep my mind off her. I am pretty sure Teddy did not want to be President at any such terrible price as this….". The Teddy she is referring to, of course, is Theodore Roosevelt, McKinley's Vice President. Roosevelt assumed the duties as President after McKinley was shot. McKinley died 9 days later. Archival tape repaired at fold, else fine.
