Manuscript, 10 pages, octavo, ca. 1870-1873, Fort Stanton, New Mexico. Two soldiers, "Howard" and "Will" of "D" Troop, 8th Cavalry Regiment, composed this manuscript poem while posted to Fort Stanton. Their rather lengthy verse consists of 47 stanzas, each having 4 to 5 lines. A very short sample of their "ethno-centric" work is as follows: "...The wild Apaches are the headmen/ And so in fairness i commence/ To tell you something of the redmen/ Each mountain chain contains a hive/ Of marauding sons of thunder/ Who somehow manage to continue/ To live upon muscal and plunder...The injin trembles when he hears/ Around his head the bullets whistle/ And most unpleasant to his ears/ Is crack of carbine or of pistol...These natives in the yankees eyes/ Have neither virtue brains or vigor/ A most unhappy compromise/ Between the injins and the nigger...". A unique piece of Western history. VF condition.
