Three letters signed Joseph Day, 3pp. total, 8vo, from Montana to his sister, location unknown. The author's dealings with Indians led to his death as is stated in a fourth letter penned by a friend, L. F. Healy. The letters read, in part: "(Sun River, M.T.,10/2/71)…I am well and doing wele I am going north this winter…(Sun River, M.T., 11/20/72)…I am coming home next spring, I am short up (for) money now but I am to work…I canot go home now if I wanted to…(Belley River, British America, 12/24/73)…I am trading with the Indians L F Healey spoke about times is dull here now but in the spring they are lively…(L. F. Healy, Sun River, M.T., 5/10/74)…Your letter to your Brother Jos. Days came to hand this morning. Knowing you would be anxious to learn of his fate, I took the liberty to open the same, and endeavored to find your address…I am render the painful necessity to inform you your Brother Jos. Day was killed by Indians sometime last month…cannot find out any particulars, another young man was with him and murdered at the same time…" Very good condition.
