Autograph Letter Signed, “W.L. Utley” 5th Tennessee Infantry, 3p. quarto, Camp Brown, June 28, 1861, and reads in part: “...I have no doubt that you have heard that I had joined a volunteer company, and am one of the employees of Jeff Davis encamped in five miles of the Tenn. & Kentucky state line at Union City....It was very hard to telll themm all good bye at home especially when going upon such an expedition as like this for it is almost like parting at death for there is five chances against one for me if we have much fighting...This is one of the wickedest place in Tenn. there is all kind of gambling swearing & mischief of all kinds....There was a man killed in the sixth regiment a few days since for disobeying orders a bayonet was thrust through him and he died in about twenty four hours it cause a great excitement for some theough he was killed unjustly...I did not tell you what regiment that I belong to it is 6th regiment our Col. is named W.H. Stephens one of the best orators in West Tenn. Our name or the name of our company is ‘Danes’ our captain is one the nicest men in the regiment John Ingram....” Small repair, else VG.
