HUGER, Frank (1837-1897) Son of CSA General Benjamin Huger. Mustered into the Norfolk Light Artillery as captain, unit named Huger's Battery in his honor. Served as ADC to his father. Promoted to colonel in February of 1865. Captured at Saylor's Creek April 1865 by old schoolmate from USMA General George Armstrong Custer. Autograph Letter Signed, "Frank Huger", 2p. quarto, Fort Columbus, New York Harbor, April 15, 1861, to his friend Lt. Smith, and reads in part: "...what a crowd of events have transpired...Sumpter taken and Civil War now on us. I've just read an article from the 'Courier and Enquire', of this morning, which made me so mad that I determined to write to you by way of appeasing my wrath...I suppose Bob Anderson will be here Wedy. Morning when we'll get some particulars. I'm glad you saw Dod. He no doubt gave you all the details of this part of the world. I was might sorry to see him resign, but its likely he only anticipated what he would soon have to do by a very few days. Johnson has not resigned, he is here having just got back from leave. Major Heintzelman is here, took command today. A recruiting rendezvous has been opened in Phila. Woods is ordered there....Saw Warren and walking down the street met Vanderbilt - whiskers and all...Saw Charley Field, Fitz Lee and Owens. Got a good cursing from them for not going in the Cavalry. Had I done so I would now be the 2nd, 2nd Lieut. in the 2d Cavy., just where Sam Sweet is. I'm glad he had the luck anyhow. McMillan came over here last night, par consequence I got tight....Everybody here is as usual. She is very well I believe. Saw her last Thursday. She is a nice girl, the more I see her the better I like her, but Civil War and females don't go together..." Fine
