Autograph Letter Signed, Captain George Jackson, 1-1/4p. quarto, Post Monterey, September 8, 1861, addressed to Brigaider General Jackson, it reads in part: “...I have to state that the forces ordered to report to me will probably be sufficient to dispense the Union men & northern forces in conjunction with them near Petersburg; but since my last letter to you, the command of this post has been turned over to me. The troops now here consist of the cavalry & the sick of the different regients...I have not more than 50 privates present for duty, all of which are required t take care & guard the horses - I find some 11 prisoners in the guard house to take care of...I find also a great deal of police duty necessary about the post, as the hospitals & c. are in a very filthy condition, & it is absolutely necessary to the health of the troops stationed here as well as to the comfort of the sick that the whole place should be thoroughly cleansed...” Fine.
