Autograph Letter Signed, "Geo. Jackson Capt. Comdg. Forces on PetersB. Road" 1-1/2p. quarto, Post Monterey, September 10, 1861, addressed to 2nd Lt. Garnett Andrews, as A.A.A.G to General Henry Jackson, in part: "….my cavalry picket near Petersburg under the command of Sergt. J.A. Strain succeeded in surrounding a Union picket of 16 men some 5 miles north of Petersburg on the road to Greenland - killed one & captured the rest of the party. The whole affair was well managed & Sergt. Strain deserves high credit for the success. He was aided to some extent by the citizens of Petersburg who cooperated with him. The prisoners reached here last night under a guard & I have them still in close custody. It appears from the admissions of nearly all of them, made in the course of a personal examination of each one separately by myself that they belonged to a company of what they called 'Home Guards' wh had been mustered into the Federal service & who had been supplied with arms, either by the pseudo Gov. Pierpoint or by the Federal Govt. Their names & admissions I have taken down in writing & I send you enclosed a copy…" Fine. Includes copy mentioned, 2p. quarto "Names & abstracts of statements of Union men captured by the cavalry picket near Petersburg under the command of Sergt. J.A. Strain Rockbridge Cavalry…" which states the names of the soldiers and a statement, such as "Timothy Connell of Hardy - a miller - says that he was a union man until lately but has changed was caught in communication with a union picket in arms against the Confederate states…" Document is Fine.
