Autograph Letter Signed, "Geo. Jackson Capt. Comdg. Cavalry", 2p. quarto, Cavalry Camp near Monterey, September 6, 1861, addressed to Lt. Garnett Andrews, A.A.A.G. to Gen. Henry Jackson and reads in part: "… I received information this morning from the Sergt. In command of my picket stationed near the village of Petersburg in Hardy county, that there are one hundred of the enemies infantry stationed within 10 miles of that place & that they had thrown out pickets to within five miles. His force is a very small one…not more than 30 men…& he writes me that unless reinforced he will be compelled to fall back…you will find the infantry is the only force which can act effeciently against an enemy aided in their movements by a large disaffected population & that cavalry can accomplish nothing except in connection with infantry…I should therefore respectfully suggest that a force of 150 or 200 infantry be detailed from the 1st Georgia Regt. stationed at his place with say, 15 days provisions…" Fine.
