Manuscript Letter Signed, "Geo. Jackson, Capt. Comdg. Cavalry" 1p. quarto, Cavalry Camp near Monterey, July 22, 1861, addressed to Lt. Garnett Andrews, A.D.C. to Gen. Henry Jackson, and reads: "…I have the honor to request that the cavalry compnaies under my command be ordered to Staunton Va. for the purpose of getting camp equipage & recruited their horses. The companies being intesely distribute of clothing hats cooking untensils & all necessary camp equipages. The horses have also been reported unfit for service for ten days at Staunton good barracks are already provided for the troops. I make the request at the earnest solicitation of all the officers in the command…" Fine…plus; Autograph Letter Signed, Sgt. J.A. Strain, 2p. 16mo., August 28, 1861, pencil, addressed to Capt. George Jackson, and reads "on yesterday about one mile & half from this place our scouts was surprised by some ten or twelve Union men in the ambush but the scouts routed them before they could get a shot at our scout got one man by the name of Owens one Gun & shot pouch. The other is from Preston Co. I consider him a spy he says he has been in the Northern army his name is Overton send some more men if you could possibly spare them…" VG. (2 items)
