Autograph Letter Signed, "Wm. B. Ball Capt. Chesterfield Cavalry" 1p. folio, July 11, 1861, Fairfax Court House, addressed to Provost Marshall Butler, and reads "I yesterday heard old man Jackson, at the jail in this place, tell Capt. Powell that Spear who lives on the Flint Hill road & just within the picket has threes sons in the Federal Army, and that one of those sons was in this place the day before yesterday, dressed in citizens clothes. And further said that Spear himself was in the constant habit of communicating with the enemy, through the back part of his place. I do not know his (Jacksons) informant, or whether Genl. Bonham may think it worth investigating…" With Docketing on verso dated August 16, 1861, "Refered to Col. Bacon as recent events require that this party should be watch [ed] and the case investigated. The Genl. Desires Col. Bacon will watch the party and endeavor to investigate and fined out if he has a son in the Federal Army…" About VG.
