Manuscript Document Signed, by William Frederick Nance of South Carolina, who was on the staff’s of Bonham, Gist, Evans, and Ripley, 1p. folio, October 25, 1861, Head Quarters, 1st Corps Army of the Potomac, near Centreville, being General Orders No. 65 issued to Colonel Bacon, and reads in part: “...All affal after butchering cattle must invariably be buried in pits, by the butcher’s connected with troops of this corps and it is made the duty of the field officer of the day of the several Regiments to inspect the slaughter grounds of their respective regiments daily...” VG.
