GIST, States Rights (1831 - 1864) Confederate brigadier general who commanded a division at Chickamauga and Missionary Ridge, led his own brigade in the Atlanta campaign, killed in action leading his men at Franklin. Autograph Letter Signed, “S.R. Gist” 1p. quarto, November 4, 1861, addressed to Colonel Ed Manigault (1817-1874) 6th Battalion South Carolina Infantry, stating that there would be no meeting of the Ordnance Board, it reads in most part: “...I dispatched the Governor & requested him to send the answer to you. I do not think you should go in the morning. There will be no one there, but Gen. Means & he can return at any time...” XF.
