Written by Col. W. J. Hardee; originally published pre-Civil War for U.S. Army use. Hardee changed allegiance to the South at opening of war and manuals republished for C.S. Army. The complete two volume set published in single volume (each with own title page). "RIFLE AND LIGHT INFANTRY TACTICS; FOR THE EXERCISE AND MANOEUVRES OF TROOPS WHEN ACTING AS LIGHT INFANTRY OR RIFLEMEN…prepared under direction of War Department by Bvt. Lieut-Col W. J. Hardee, U.S. Army." Published Richmond, Virginia by J. W. Randolph 1861; on reverse of title page "Steam-power presses of Evans &Cogswell, Charleston, S.C." Vol. 1 228 pages; Vol. II 230 pages…PLUS many foldout and single page plates. ("C.S. Imprints" by Parrish &Willingham No. 4870.) Normal aging, but not hard wear. Very light spotting on few pages; a bit heavier on title page. Unmarked leather covers look as though they were original and of the period, but could be early recovering; show wear and scuffing mostly on spine. Authentic large period inscription in pencil on front fly-leaf "Camp near Chaffins Bluff [note the correct spelling], July 16, 1864…Capt. W. J. Callais…Co. G 33'd N.C…Lanes Brig…Light Div. …A.N. Va." (Light and fading, but readable.) Scarce Confederate imprint especially desirable with its fine associated history of use.
