November 6, 1861 dated affidavit with original signatures of four men of Pendleton County in the mountains of western Virginia (soon to become West Va) who appeared before local Justice of the Peace "…and made oath to the following declarations viz: they declare themselves citizens of the Southern Confederacy and will render all the aid they may be called upon to assist the said Confederacy in acquiring and sustaining their independence; and further, that they will throw, so far as they may be able, every obstacle in the way of the Northern Federal Government. In testimony whereof they have hereunto affixed their signatures this day…[etc.]" With original signature of Justice of the Peace and each of the four named men (one had to use "His mark," of illiterate). 8 x 8. Few small brown spots and minor ink stain in blank margin. The document was among the papers of Capt. J. C. Hopper, an aide-de-camp to General Fremont, then commander of the "Mountain Department" of U.S. Army fighting in West Virginia. Normal aging. Exc. Completely authentic. (See also the following item.)
