Autograph Letter Signed, “Jno. E. Wynn” 1p. folio, Waterford, June 1, 1862, addressed to John Jones Pettus (1813-1867) Governor of Mississippi, 1854, 1859-63. After the Civil War, amnesty was refused to him, and he became a fugitive; the manhunt continued until his death in Pulaski County, Ark., in early 1867. It reads in part: “... I respectfully ask your attentio to the enclosed certificates [not present] of My Tanner and the Hon. R.S. Grier who is familiar with My Tanning operations...I made an investment in New Orleans in Hides amounting to about $5000, beside the Hides bought in from the surrounding country and have at this time about 40 vats sent...I have also a sufficient Negro fellow force, with the supervision of Mr. Britton my Tanner to carry on the business successfully, and respectfully ask an exemption from the conscript of Mr. Britton, my tanner...” VG.
