RANDOLPH, George Wythe (1818-1867) Grandson of Thomas Jefferson. Confederate gneral and Secretary of War who resigned from this post after being reprimanded for not issuing orders via President Davis’ office. War-Date Autograph Letter Signed, “Geo. W. Randolph Secy of War” on Confederate War Department letterhead, Richmond, March 27, 1862, addressed to Captain McCann of the 11th Tennessee, and reads “You are authorized to raise and muster into service a Battalion of not less than three companies of cavalry for the war. These companies will be organized at first as an independent Battalion, which will elect its own field officers. The regt. is reserved, however, to the department to assign it to any command, or incorporate it with any Regiment, which may hereafter be found expedient...” Some light foxing, else Fine. This Regiment was later organized and designated the 9th Tennessee Cavalry.
