A very rare war-date Confederate officer’s, ink inscribed, 3pp. 4to., letter written by Col. Virginius D. Groner, 61st Virginia Infantry concerning fabric for a new uniform, and of using his influence with top Confederate officials to gain office posts for his sisters, in part: “…I will write a letter for ‘flag of truce’…the socks I did not need at present…shirts, neck ties and collars I have a plenty in camp…never mind about the flannel…it was only to give strength to the coat. The blue trimming was to…[use] on the front of the coat…get it about 3/4 of yds wide…I don’t want any for cuff or collar…only for…cord to go around the top of the collar and down each side of the front…the knife Brother Sam can have [it] for ten cents (a postage stamp) if he wants it…I can not give it to him…Mrs. Cooper the lady we called upon at the Spotswood…gave me a very pretty knife…Congress [is] creating new clerkships in several of the Department…[to] be filled by persons not liable to military duty…several of them may be given to ladies…let me know if there is any vacancies…if you do not get a place…I will write to Mr. [Judah] Benjamin and solicit his aid…call on Col. Gorgas with sister tell him I desired you to see him and ask if there was a prospect of soon getting a place…the Major of the Commissary department…is different if he has a vacancy…he will give it to you…let me know…before I write to Mr. B…”. Groner enlisted in 1862 as colonel, was twice wounded, once at Chancellorsville, and also during the battle of Spotsylvania, May 17, 1864. He surrendered with Lee at Appomattox on April 9, 1865. Minor fold splits with light soiling, else very good.
