A very rare war-date Confederate soldier’s pencil inscribed letter 4pp. 8vo., on “CONFEDERATE STATES OF AMERICA” stationery written by a soldier under Longstreet’s command “Yorktown, Va., Apr. 19, 1862”concerning his regiment’s movements at the onset of McClellan’s Peninsular campaign, in part: “…I found the regiment at Orange C. H…we were ordered off without any notice…we marched that night about sixteen miles…until we reached Richmond…and camped within ten miles of the city…we received orders to be ready to march…our whole division was thrown together & marched through town in a solid body which…presented a grand spectacle…our men…stood the march very well…the weather…was perfectly awful & we without tents…Jimmy was made a little sick by the experience & I left him behind, but he is now with us & very well again…we are now stationed within three miles of Yorktown…there is now a large force concentrated at this point…we will have a fight soon…Waller Duval is stationed…near us & seemed delighted to meet with us…”. A good look at military life in Gen. Joe Johnston’s Army of the Rapidan, while away attending to other business, Johnson placed Longstreet in charge of his army. These troops formed the nucleus of what would become the Army of Northern Virginia. Inscribed on CSA patriotic stationery printed by Bounitz, Goldsboro, N. C. that depicts a firing cannon beneath the Stars an Bars Confederate battle flag with a poem alongside that reads, in part: “Bright Banner of Freedom with pride I unfurl thee…Emblem of Liberty, Symbol of Truth…in triumph shall wave. O’er the Southerner’s Home and…Grave…”. Worthy of further research, since the author’s name appearances on the bottom of the letter, but is difficult to make out. A bite light, else very good.
