Beautifully penned in a small, easily read hand, three page letter (4½ x 8) by Confederate Capt. John Weidemeyer (with full signature) from "Camp at Lamkins Mill [Mississippi] November 1, 1862 to his wife "…I made every effort to get a leave of absence, but did not succeed. I even offered to resign, but was told [it] would not be received and no leave would be given me upon tender of resignation. [Thus] no possible way for me to come to your assistance…you are now forced to depend upon your own exertions…you have practicably no husband. God only knows how soon it may be…would have sent money but had none…will send at first opportunity…we are still in camp near Holly Springs. The Missouri troops still talk about going [home]…I am inclined to think [we will] not…hope you will remain in Texas you are safer there than you could be in Missouri or with the Army" and admonishes her not to come to join him ! Thanks her for sending the lock of their new baby's hair "…it's the only memento I have to remind me that I am a husband and a father…it is said that England and France have determined to recognize our Confederacy. I feel indifferent about it...God will order all things right…" Light aging, but exc. +. Minor chip edge of blank margin. Accompanied with photostat of bio sketch of Weidemeyer.
