Smith” 1p. oblong quarto, September 24, 1863, Morris Island, South Carolina, Department of the South Headquartes in the field, removed from a letterbook it reads in part: “ Until further orders, fresh onions will be issued to the troops throughout this Department Twice a week in place of beasn, peas, rice and hominey...” Good.
