Original $500 coupon bond issued by the TREASURY DEPARTMENT OF THE CONFEDERATE STATES OF AMERICA, issued in Richmond, February 24, 1863. Portrait of SECRETARY OF STATE JUDAH BENJAMIN. Benjamin, the only Jewish member of the CSA cabinet, served as Attorney General of the Provisional Government of the Confederate States from February 25, 1861 to September 17, 1861. He then succeeded L.P. Walker as Secretary of War. With the establishment of the permanent government, he succeeded R.M.T. Hunter as Secretary of State on March 18, 1862 and served in that position until the end of the War. Bond measures 11” X 13” and includes 12 unredeemed coupons. (2 rows of 6 each) still attached. Criswell # 65, Rarity 6. (Reference: Criswell's "Confederate & Southern States Bonds," which illustrates all known CSA bonds). This bond is No. 920 of a TOTAL ISSUE OF 1600 BONDS. Fine, clean condition and suitable for display. A scarce low issue bond, authorized under the Act of the Confederate Congress of August 19, 1861. British Bondholders Committee stamp on verso, dated December 1, 1881. (Much of the capital raised to support the Confederate Government was raised overseas by selling discounted bonds in Europe, especially in Great Britain and the Netherlands. When the Civil War ended, many individuals were holding such bonds and entertained the hope that somehow the successor southern states or even the US government might eventually redeem the bonds, even at deeply discounted rates. In 1881 the British Bondholders Association was formed in an effort to lobby the British Government to act on behalf of the members.)
