Manuscript Document, being a copy of letter by Lt. Col. Barteau to R.M. Hooe, March 22, 1863, Verona, Mississippi, “Official R.M. Hooe A.A.G.” who was on the staffs of Gens. Chalmers and Ruggles, it reads in part “I have the honor to state that Maj. W.M. Inge is here with orders from the Sect. of War to organize into a Batt. Warren’s, Moreland’s, Copeland’s and Baxter’s companies and also has orders from Brig. Genl. Chalmers...as he states to muster other companies, all companies in North Miss. So far as these orders from Brig. Genl. Chalmers conflict with the orders and instructions, which I have received, I can not respect them, unless ordered so to do by the Genl. Comdg. the 1st Dist...” VG.
