Memento newspaper, 1p folio, of The Daily Citizen, Vicksburg, Miss Thursday July 2, 1863.. Printed on wallpaper. Horizontal folds, and marginal tears, o/w good condition. The famous Vicksburg Wallpaper edition of "The Daily Citizen" includes the "Note" dated July 4th, 1863 in which it is announced General Grant has "caught the rabbit." The Daily Citizen taunted Grant by stating that he had to capture the city before he could dine in it., stating, "The way to cook rabbit is first "catch the rabbit." Grant's troops upon raiding the offices of the "Daily Citizen" found the press still set up for July 2, so they left the date and added Grant's famous July 4th "Note" in the bottom right corner. This is a cornerstone to any fine Civil War collection featuring a note from the conqueror of the ever important Confederate port city, Vicksburg, Mississippi.
