ELZEY, ARNOLD (1816 - 1871) Confederate major general who surrendered the Augusta Arsenal to Union forces. He then joined the Confederate Army, fought at First Bull Run and with Jackson in the Valley, seriously wounded at Gaines Mill. Excessively rare war-date A.L.S as major general, 1p. 4to., Richmond, Jan. 10, 1863 to Brigadier General Henry A. Wise, in part: "…I have thought it best to write out the instructions I gave you this morning, and have accordingly done so…" Irregular left margin, else boldly penned and near fine.
